Disposable (2005)

This cylindrical chandelier, made from hundreds of disposable clear plastic champagne flutes, explores themes of illusion and deception. The inspiration came from a friend’s wedding celebration, where guests travelled on a red double-decker bus. Because glass was not allowed onboard for safety reasons, the couple provided elegant, etched plastic flutes instead. At first glance these imposters looked convincingly luxurious—until the moment hand or lip met the unmistakable texture of plastic.

The chandelier plays on this tension between appearance and reality. It presents an object that seems refined, extravagant, and crystal-like, yet is constructed entirely from a mass-produced, short-lived, throwaway product. The work invites viewers to question how easily value can be suggested, imitated, or fabricated through material and form.
