Icicle (2020)

Icicle is the companion piece to an earlier lighting work with the title Flame, which is created from vintage amber glassware. The amber glassware evokes the warmth of fire and a flickering flame, while the cut-crystal glass of the Icicle references the cold sharp transparency of ice. Icicle is created from around 300 individual pieces of domestic cut-crystal clear glassware, such a vases, drinking vessels, plates, and decanters. Icicle is created in two different formats, a linear and a tiered stem format. The glassware hangs on brushed aluminium rods which are suspended from either a long rectangular ceiling panel or a circular panel. In both variations the lengths of glassware hang in a tiered system, creating the shape and form of an icicle. In the case of the stem format the glassware is softly illuminated by a centrally positioned bespoke LED light shaft. The linear example is illuminated by LED filament bulbs positioned in glass vases at the end of each rod. The illumination brings the glassware to life and accentuates the patterns and designs cut into the glass.
