Icicle (2020)
Icicle is the companion piece to an earlier lighting work titled Flame, which was created using vintage amber glassware. While the amber elements of Flame evoke the warmth and flicker of fire, the cut-crystal glass of Icicle embodies the cold, sharp transparency of ice.
Composed of approximately 300 individual pieces of domestic cut-crystal glassware—including vases, drinking vessels, plates, and decanters—Icicle is produced in two formats: a linear version and a tiered stem version. The glassware is suspended from brushed aluminium rods, which hang from either a long rectangular ceiling panel or a circular panel. In both variations, the glass elements descend in graduated lengths, forming the tapering silhouette of an icicle.
In the stem format, the glassware is softly illuminated by a centrally positioned bespoke LED light shaft. The linear format, by contrast, is lit by LED filament bulbs housed within glass vases at the end of each rod. In both cases, the illumination animates the glassware, highlighting the intricate patterns and designs cut into each piece.
