Incandled (2024)

Incandled reimagines the legacy of the incandescent light bulb, a symbol of innovation since Edison’s 1879 debut, now rendered obsolete by energy-efficient LED’s. Drawing its title from a fusion of incandescent and LED, this sculptural work creates a glowing metropolis of light, where old and new coexist in poetic tension.
Using 17 decommissioned incandescent bulbs paired with 19 dimmable LED’s, the piece celebrates over a century of lighting history. Incandled honours the incandescent bulb as an enduring symbol of invention – once revolutionary, now fading. In recontextualising these familiar objects, the work invites viewers to reflect on what is gained and what is lost in the name of progress. Through light, form and resonance, Incandled becomes not only a sculptural archive, but a living eulogy marking the end of an era, while illuminating the way forward.
